The First Things To Buy For A New Home

It is such an exciting time when you move into a new home. It doesn’t matter if it is your first move, or you’ve moved a couple of times before, when you get into a new home, you just can’t help but feel that buzz of excitement. It’s the same as when you get a new car, or a new phone.

It’s just nice to have something new, or you may be even moving into a house lived in before so you’re most likely going to be even more desperate to put your own stamp on it, but that’s easily done. You’re just going to have so much more fun decorating the home, making it your own, and finally having something that you feel you can settle into. Below are some ideas on what you could potentially change or add first, just so you can make it your own that little bit quicker. So keep on reading, and see if any of these are what your new home needs!

The Flooring

So this is a big debate for some people. Some of you will be completely fine going into a home, and keeping the flooring that they had before. But some of you will think of it as used, and just really want something fresh laying down that you can call your own. If you do, one of the most perfect styles that is really in at the minute, is vinyl or laminate flooring.

If you visit this flooring website, you will find some fabulous examples to inspire you. This type of flooring is just so much easier to clean, it looks so smart, and it’s so easy to style around it. It gives you the perfect opportunity to put a big rug down in the centre to give some of it that padding, and add a nice oak coffee table on top. Or, if carpet is more your style of flooring, we still think that darker carpet is the better option, simply because it’s so much easier to maintain and keep clean.

Furniture Essentials

The first mistake that people seem to make, is leaving the ordering of furniture too late, so then people are sat on the floor in the living room for weeks, waiting for their perfect sofa to come. So our top tip, is to order things in super early, so at least then you can make your house a home right from the beginning. Leather furniture is really in right now, and it’s so much easier to clean and maintain than other materials. We also think a nice oak side table is really important for the dining room. So many people don’t make the dining room as good as it could be, but an oak sideboard gives the perfect storage space, as well as making the room look more grand.

Kitchen necessities

For some of us, the kitchen is the heart of the home and it will feel so much newer when you have all your utensils, pots and pans and appliances e.g. kettle, microwave, toaster ready to go. Always make sure you test all of the appliances are plugged in and working in case you have to send anything back.

To keep your new kitchen in tip-top shape make sure you also have a bin and plenty of cleaning products. In fact before you unload your dishware, give the kitchen units a thorough wipe down especially if someone has been living in the house before.

Create Your Dream Bedroom

Your bedroom is the place where you should be able to relax and get a good night sleep. In order to do that, check if your current bed fits in the room otherwise you may have to pick up a new bed frame and mattress. If you know your move-in date, let them know when and where to deliver it. When that’s done, add your fresh bed linen, pillows and a duvet to your shopping list.

Once you’re more settled you can start adding more furniture to your bedroom, such as bedside tables and storage. To save some money, try to find deals at local charity shops that sell furniture or on Facebook marketplace.

If you don’t have fitted wardrobes in your bedroom or you need a bigger one, you can always add a freestanding wardrobe to hang the rest of your clothes. If space is limited, look for a wardrobe that has both drawers and a hanging rod.

Bathroom Essentials

Regardless of whether you have bought a newly built or second hand property, bathrooms usually come tiled or with an existing floor and are already fitted with a toilet, shower and/or bathtub, and a sink. But some things you will want to change first is the toilet seat and add essentials like towels, shower curtain, bath mat, toothbrush holder and of course toilet paper.

Security and Safety Measures

To make sure your new home is as safe as possible make sure to change the locks as you never know who may still have keys. If your extra safety conscious, a home security system / security cameras can provide extra comfort, especially when you’re getting used to a new neighbourhood. If your home already has the equipment installed, just ask the security company to activate it.

Also remember to test every smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. If your new home doesn’t have a carbon monoxide detector, buy one online from Amazon.
