Designing My Own Dress with Doc Cotton

An email recently landed in my inbox from London based brand Doc Cotton asking if I wanted to design my own piece of clothing! Of course I jumped at the chance, I've always wanted a unique dress that no one else has and thanks to them I got to do exactly that! I was not familiar with the brand but that's what's great about being a fashion blogger discovering up and coming brands and this one really is unique and exciting!

What I also like about Doc Cotton is they have a very good ethos. Whilst their mission is for you to create your own customised clothing they are doing it sustainably by making all clothing in a studio by seamstresses who all receive over the London living wage. Each garment is also made bespoke so no garments are wasted and destroyed and all the fabrics are sourced from the UK and they only used high quality 100% cotton.

How to design a dress with Doc Cotton

The whole process of designing your own clothing with Doc Cotton was super simple, first you pick what item of clothing you want to design they range in price from £40-£90. I opted for the tea dress so I could wear it at work and on the weekends.

Next you upload the image you want to use for your clothing, but you have to ensure that the design naturally tiles, meaning that if the file uploaded is placed next to itself, then it would seamlessly flow into itself, creating a continuing pattern. You can also move the bar to zoom the print in and out which I think is such a great feature. You also choose the zip and thread colour as my dress was going to be blue I opted for white. Once you're happy you add to basket and they get making!

My Doc Cotton Design

After trawling through endless images online for the perfect print I came across this blue  tropical / striped print and instantly loved it! Plus we're having the best summer in the UK what better print to show it off. When I received the dress I was super impressed with the quality and fit for my petite frame and it came with the name of the person who made my dress which I think is a lovely touch. I finished off my summer look with white broderie anglais pumps, Adexe rose gold watch and a circle bag.

Have you ever designed your own dress?

  1. Wow seems like such a honourable opportunity to be a part of, and an amazing print you have chosen for a dress. Not too pricey either for what is involved.

  4. This is such a phenomenal service! I love that the brand uses 100% cotton and ensures a living wage for its employees - so much fashion is too fast without any ethics so its refreshing to find a brand that breaks that mould.

  5. This is such a genius idea!! My mother was a dress-maker when I was growing up, and I used to steal the scraps that fell to the floor and design fashion outfits for my dolls. I dreamt of being a fashion designer when I grew up, so this design your own dress idea really appeals to me!
