Gluten free guide to North Devon

For our six year anniversary we stayed in the small seaside town of Braunton, North Devon close to Croyde, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe so as you can imagine there was plenty of choices for food and drink. Being that my fiance Blake can only dine at places offering gluten free options, I always do extensive research and wanted to share the gluten free places we found.

The Riverside, Braunton

First on my gluten free guide to North Devon, is this small restaurant right on the riverside of Braunton hence the name The Riverside. Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner we opted for the 3 course for £24 which was a bargain for the high quality, freshly sourced food we ate. Although not everything on the menu was gluten free, they were able to accommodate so for example Blake had halloumi and sweet potato fries for starter whereas I had a doughnut with beef brisket inside. Sounds strange but surprisingly good! Then for main Blake was able to have Rib Eye Steak roasted on the bone, grilled baby gem, salsa Verde, skinny fries while I had Roasted Stone Bass, curry and coconut sauce, buttered sweetheart cabbage, pomme puree. Both of these were gluten free.

Siam Bistro, Braunton

We both love Thai food and always find that most of the menu is gluten free it just doesn't say it on the menu so its always good to ask. The Siam Bistro is a small restaurant in Braunton, so its best to book as they are very busy being the only thai restaurant in the area. For starters we shared chicken satay and thai fishcakes which were both delicious. Then for main blake had duck penang curry and I had green curry both served with sticky rice which were also very tasty.

The Pasty Bakehouse, Ilfracombe

You can't come to the British seaside and not have a cornish pasty. So we were excited that The Pasty Bakehouse right opposite the harbour in Ilfracombe were serving a gluten free steak pasty or cheese and onion gluten free pasty. They are so hard to find back in Warwickshire so it's always a lovely treat when we travel to Devon or Cornwall.

Bull & Bear, Barnstaple

On our final day in North Devon, we wanted to find somewhere for lunch and to watch the British F1 race before heading home. The Bull & Bear in Barnstaple have an extensive american style menu with all gluten free options clearly marked including crispy chicken, halloumi fries, mozzarella sticks and burgers. The gluten free food was affordable and tasty.
