The Best Winter Sun Destinations 2018

At this time of year, when I'm back at work after a hectic Christmas and the UK is STILL dreary and cold, all I want to do is escape the winter blues and jump on a plane to somewhere hot. Luckily there are plenty of winter sun destinations a short plane ride away from the UK and with flights at reasonable prices in January/February it really is the best time to travel and get some much needed Vitamin D.

But with so many destinations and travel websites to look for your perfect winter sun holiday where do you go first? Why not try HolidayGems, they have plenty of winter sun destinations to choose from including Portugal, Spain, Greece and Cape Verde to name a few and not only can you search by destination but you can choose by holiday type (all inclusive) and they have lots of deals.

Algarve, Portugal

Having been visiting the Algarve, Portugal since I was a kid, I can highly recommend it as a winter sun destination. In fact because it has been named one of the cheapest destinations for flights and accommodation and benefiting from the Mediterranean climate, it keeps tourists coming back every year. You can expect long, warm and dry summers and very mild winters. In fact the Algarve receives more sun each year than California. My top tip would be to carry around a light jacket in the evening when you're heading out for dinner and drinks.

Cape Verde

Talking of Portugal and on my travel wishlist for 2018, is former Portuguese colony Cape Verde. Just off the northwest coast of Africa and a six hour flight away, this underrated winter sun destination is gorgeous all year round with highs of around 26 degrees this time of year and beautiful sandy beaches, it really is a no brainer. There are also a group of 10 different islands to choose from including Boa Vista and Sal all offering beautiful beaches, a tropical climate and stunning landscapes.

Dubai

Another destination that stays warm pretty much all year round is Dubai, January is actually meant to be their winter but with highs of 23 degrees I wouldn't be complaining and as it's less humid then their summer months it means you can enjoy more outdoor activities such as a Jeep safari. Although if you're thinking of travelling here you may want to stretch your credit card that little further as Dubai is known as one of the richest cities on Earth but hey with a little planning you can make it within your budget.

Gran Canaria

There are four different Canary islands to choose from, and I have visited two of them Tenerife and Gran Canaria but the latter won it over for me because of the stunning stretch of beaches, scenic views and  being that its o
n the northwestern tip of Africa, the weather is pretty much glorious all year round, especially in the South. I stayed in Anfi Del Mar which has its own private beach as well as 6 different pools to choose from if you prefer not to get too sandy. Another positive is that the sea is also really warm if you love to swim, with average temperatures in the early twenties.

Dominican Republic

This place was one of my travel highlights of 2017, having never stayed at an all inclusive resort or even visited the Caribbean before this spoilt me for future holidays to come and I'm eager to go back for some winter sun. The hurricane season lasts between June and November so this time of year is the best time to visit and I can assure you, you wont regret splashing the cash. With tropical weather reaching 30 degrees, white-sandy beaches lined with palm trees and views to die for, this should be at the top of your list.

Are you travelling anywhere for some winter sun?

  1. I agree Algarve is a a great winter destination. I would also add an Asian country like Vietnam, and a country like Colombia (where I am now) to that list.
