Although office dress codes are becoming more informal (hello dress down Fridays), it’s still nice to feel smart and dress appropriately when heading to work especially if you have meetings. This is why wearing denim for your nine-to-five can be tricky but Trilogy Stores (premium denim retailers of ladies straight cut jeans) are on hand with some expert denim styling tips.
Styling denim jeans for work
If you’re new to wearing denim for work, or your office isn’t super relaxed, you can play it safe with black denim with a smart shirt tucked in. Black high-waisted jeans can create a more fitted look and can elongate your legs which is perfect when matched with your favourite pair of heels. Or if you prefer you could buy a pair of black jeans with a playful hem to add an edge to your outfit that’s still work appropriate.
Culottes are also very in this season especially when it's warmer, and there’s no reason why you can’t bring the denim trend to the desk. Black or indigo finishes look fab with a smart blouse, blazer, and peep-toe flats. Remember to tuck your blouse in to neaten up your outfit and add heels when heading out for post office drinks.
Similarly, cropped leg jeans are suitable for the warmer months and can be styled with loafers and a cami or blouse. Why not brighten up your spring/summer wardrobe with a pop of colour such as pastels. Lilac or sky-blue denim can complement a smart shirt well.
Classic blue skinny jeans don’t have to look casual either. With a sleeveless white shirt tucked in and a patterned blazer, you can create an outfit that’s anything but boring. Alternatively white jeans are a great option for the summer, (just don't spill anything!) style them for work with a dark or pastel shirt tucked in.
Styling a denim skirt for work
Pencil skirts and a shirt are a classic style worn by many women in the office. It’s one way to feel feminine without revealing too much and can look super stylish. But you don't have to keep wearing the same midi skirt again and again trade it in for a dark-wash or navy denim skirt.
One of the many ways to style a denim skirt is with a ruffle shirt and a fitted jacket. Or pair with a long-sleeved crew-neck and heeled ankle boots. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colours either. Pastel coloured skirts are perfect for the warmer months just simply tuck in a chiffon blouse and wear with heeled sandals or ballet flats. Or, if you’re feeling more daring, opt for a bold red or green denim skirt and wear with a classic black top to tone it down.
Just remember to avoid distressed denim and light-washes as these can appear more beachwear than work wear, and stay away from skirts that sit too high above the knee.

From stylish indigo culottes to pencil skirts, bringing denim to the office can keep you fashionable and well-dressed. Always make sure that this dress-code is accepted in your office and don’t forget to accessorise appropriately too, cross-body bags are a good way to inject some colour into your outfit and a tailored blazer is a perfect staple piece to formalise your wardrobe.
What's your favourite way to style denim?
