A Weekend Guide To Bath

Bath is one of the most popular places to visit in the UK, tourists flock to this beautiful city to see some of its major attractions; from the Roman Baths to Bath Abbey and the Royal Crescent, to the Thermae Bath Spa. I live an hour and a half from Bath by car, so I really have no excuse not to visit and even though it's a little chilly in February there's so much to see and do in Bath, whether you can only visit for a day (check out this day trip guide) or you have a whole weekend!

Visit the Roman Baths

The Romans built this magnificent spa around 70 AD and it was Britain's only hot springs which today still flows with naturally hot water. You can walk around inside for an admission fee of £16 for adults, you will find Roman artefacts that were found within the Roman Baths, the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple and the Roman Bath House. It's pretty impressive to see how much work the Romans put into building the baths and that you can walk on the floor where they once stood.

Bath Abbey

Another piece of beautiful architecture in the city is Bath Abbey, which was restored in 1616 and took over 120 years to finish. This is still a place of worship today and can be seen from the top floor of the Roman baths. Some notable highlights include the stained glass windows, ladders of angels and obviously the tower which you can take a tour of (for a fee) and climb the 212 steps to the top where you can enjoy spectacular views of Bath, on a sunny day of course!

Shop til you drop

If, like me, you're a shopaholic, then you will love Bath. They have a wide range of your usual high street shops but there are also plenty of vintage and independent shops, such as the December 25th shop which sells Christmas products all year round! Bath also has a lot of markets including a farmers market every Saturday with local produce, the artisan market second and third Sunday and on the last Sunday of every month they hold a vintage and antiques market both at Green Park Station which I definitely want to visit when I go back to visit Bath.

Take a coffee break

Another thing that Bath has quite a lot of is coffee shops to keep you warm on a winter visit to Bath, you will be sure to bump into a different one on every corner of Bath. Our personal favourite is Colonna and Small's situated on chapel row, it was named one of the best places to get coffee in Britain by the Telegraph so you know its going to be good. The baristas serve up seriously good tasting coffee, in a minimalist setting perfect for those Instagram shots!

Wander the beautiful streets

Home to some of the nation's grandest Georgian architecture, there are many beautiful streets in Bath that you'll probably just stumble across as its quite easy to walk around pretty much the whole of Bath in one day. The Circus is a popular tourist street in Bath, which was built in 1768 and there is also a lovely restaurant with the same name there which we visited for dinner. Bath street lies opposite the Roman baths and is home to the Thermae bath spa and Queen street has my new favourite brunch place - The Wild cafe and a lovely archway right at the end. Other notable streets to practice your photography are York street, Queen square, St Annes place and Great Pulteney street.

Explore the Royal Cresent

One of the most exclusive postcodes outside London, this architecture has to be seen in real life to appreciate the massive scale of the row of 30 houses laid out in a curve.
It was built between 1767 and 1775 and is one of the greatest examples of Georgian architecture but the Royal Crescent is not the only Crescent in Bath, there are seven in total!

Visit Pulteney Bridge

Completed in 1774, Pulteney Bridge was commissioned in a Palladian style by Sir William Pulteney, prior to the bridge's construction the only way to cross the River Avon was via ferry and his plan was to connect Bath with Bathwick. This bridge is one of only four bridges in the world with shops across it and the only bridge in Britain to do so. If you stand on the grand parade you can get a fantastic shot of the bridge in all its glory and don't forget to walk across it too!

Have you visited Bath before?
