How To Save Enough Money To Travel The World

Travelling the world is pretty much a dream come true for many people, but let’s be honest - it’s not exactly something that’s going to come cheap, so if you do have dreams of travelling the world for an extended period of time, then it’s time to start crunching some numbers and seeing how you can make it happen sooner rather than later. In this travel post I'm sharing some tips on how to save enough money to be able to travel the world. Of course, not all of these will apply to you, but these should definitely provide you with a strong foundation to get started from so that it becomes less overwhelming when you start saving money.

Have a clear out:

If you’re planning on travelling - especially for a long period of time, then one of the best things you can do to fund this is to have a clear out of all the stuff you have that you don’t want or won’t be needing during your time away. This can be anything from clothes to furniture, and will of course depend on when you’re planning to come back. However, even if you don’t want to sell all of your furniture, for example because you plan on coming back in 6 months, then you can still take some time to go through any stuff that you simply don’t need or use anymore and make some cash. You’d be surprised to see just how much extra cash you have lying around in your house, and if you can put that money towards something you really want and value such as travelling. You are also recycling those things by allowing someone else to get the benefit of them, then it’s a win-win situation.

Take on extra work:

If you have plans to travel at some point and you roughly know when you’re planning to do this, then you could start saving now by taking on extra hours at your current job or you could even pick up an extra part time job. You may think this seems like a lot of effort and you may be put off from doing it, but it’s definitely going to be worth it when you’re not having to stress about money so much when travelling and being able to do the things you want to do without too much worry.

Start an online business:

Nowadays it’s easier than ever to start an online business and basically work wherever you have an internet connection, so if you’re thinking of starting an online business and you want to travel then this is the perfect time. You’ll also find that there’s a large community of digital nomads who are all doing exactly the same thing. The great thing about an online business is that, aside from the fact you can work wherever you have an internet connection, you can also set up things like a blog, online courses and digital products that will make you passive income.

Rent your place out:

One amazing way to save money to travel the world and ensure you actually have an ongoing income coming in each month is to rent out your place back home for the duration of your travels. You can either let it out privately or you can use something like Airbnb where you can even rent to someone for a set period of 6-12 months if you want to instead of just using a week-to-week schedule. However you choose to do it, renting out your place if you’re able to is truly one of the best ways to fund your travels and have something to fall back on financially.

Don’t stay in hotels:

One of biggest costs you’ll incur when travelling is going to be with accommodation, and whilst it’s fine to stay in the odd hotel here and there along the way - let’s be honest, sometimes a night or two of luxury and a really comfortable bed can make all the difference when travelling for a longer time, but unless you’re on an unlimited budget, then hotels are for the most part are not the smartest places to be staying. Instead of staying in hotels, you could opt for hostels, which are much better nowadays than they used to be and they cost a fraction of a hotel, plus they’re great places to meet fellow travellers and go on tours, etc. If you’re not really into staying in hostels, but want to save some money, then you could look for private apartments or rooms on places like Airbnb or local apartments like apartemen jakarta selatan.

Set yourself a budget:

Trying to set and stick to a budget isn’t the most fun thing in the world, but it’s definitely a good idea when travelling - especially if you’re going to be travelling for a longer time. It’s not only good to make sure you’ve budgeted for all the things you’ll need during your travels, such as food, accommodation and domestic travel, but also making sure you have a cash buffer or an emergency credit card where you can access funds if needed since you just never know what can happen.

Book things online:

Whether it’s booking tours, flights or anything else you need during your travels, you’re generally best looking online since this is where you’re most likely to find the best deals. Of course there are always going to be exceptions to this, but it’s also easier to compare prices and shop around online without being hassled by sales people who want to sell you their packages.

I hope these travel tips are useful in helping you identify some ways to either make or save enough money to go travelling around the world without worrying too much about how to finance it.

Where are you travelling next?
