A Gluten Free Guide to Cornwall

Every year me and my family take a trip to our favourite Cornish towns: Newquay and St Ives to explore the beautiful English coastline, spend time together and enjoy the local food. Me and my boyfriend are proper foodies but unfortunately our options can be somewhat limited when we go on holiday as Blake is coeliac. We were really surprised to find so many gluten free restaurants and cafes compared to when we last visited over a year ago. So if you are coeliac or just fancy hearing about some cool restaurants in Cornwall read on!

Lewinnick Lodge

Having visited Newquay quite frequently, Lewinnick lodge has become one of our favourite restaurants not just because it has gluten free options. Set on the Pentire peninsula, it's a little romantic haven away from the hustle and bustle of Newquay town and the view is spectacular. All their menu is made with local ingredients and the specials changes twice daily for lunch and dinner. If you haven't booked a table you can also order from the menu in the bar area.

On this particular Saturday me and Blake had the same starter of seafood bisque and I had slow cooked beef with potato gratin and Blake had mussels and fries for main. Dessert was an easy one for Blake as they had a flour-less chocolate brownie for dessert. All the menu's are marked with a GF symbol next to the dishes and if you have any queries the staff are on hand to help.

Box and Barber Coffeehouse

With many awards already under their belt, this new and hip coffee place doesn't just serve amazing coffee and brunch but they also offer gluten free bread! Inside the cafe is lovely and quaint with a relaxed vibe. Check out their instagram for the best coffee and brunch pictures!

The Beached Lamb Café

From the outside, you can't miss this cool place to eat and drink in Newquay town and once you step inside the decor is very boho and the staff are super lovely. The beached lamb cafe, serves not only gluten free options but vegan too. Their menu is endless with smoothies, salads, sandwiches and the best breakfast. We went for a toasted muffin topped with bacon, eggs and hash browns! It tasted as good as it looks.

Smugglers Den Inn

As I have been staying in Cornwall since I was young, I have always visited the Smugglers Den Inn for dinner. They serve pub grub at its best with an extensive menu and a specials board. Although it doesn't say gluten free on the menu my boyfriend asked for GF bread and they were happy to provide it plus the staff are so lovely they would be happy to answer any of your allergy questions.
I would always recommend booking ahead to get a table because it's super popular.

The Raw Chocolate Pie Company

Recently celebrating 10 years, we have never come across this place before in St Ives but we're so glad we did! The
Raw Chocolate Pie company not only sells little bars of chocolate pie in various flavours but Raw Fudge too. I recommend the caramel!

These products are all dairy free, gluten free, soya free and contain no refined sugar. They are not only suitable for coeliacs but also diabetics, anyone suffering with a lactose intolerance, vegans and vegetarians. The best thing is you don't have to go all the way to Cornwall to get your hands on some because they sell online too, here.

The Searoom

Situated in front of the stunning St Ives harbour, The Searoom has been our favourite gluten free restaurant because nearly everything on the menu can be made gluten free! On this occasion my boyfriend went for eggs benedict with gluten free scones and I had bacon, scrambled eggs (the best ever), hash browns and bread. If you miss breakfast don't worry they serve lunch and dinner too!

Rick Stein's Fish and Chips

You may of heard of chef Rick Stein off the TV but he also has a big presence in Cornwall with six restaurants in Padstow alone and also one in Porthleven and now Fistral Beach, Newquay, you will guarantee to come across one of them. We have previously ate at his fish and chip restaurant in Padstow so already knew they did gluten free batter but we didn't realise he had opened one overlooking Fistral beach, even better that it was a 10 minute walk from the airbnb where we were staying. Perfect fish and chips with a sea view!

Healeys Cyder Farm

Every year we pay a visit to Healeys Cyder Farm because that's where they create the best cider... RATTLER, which you are sure to come across in every pub in Cornwall. The farm itself not only has the distillery where they make the cider but also farm animals and a restaurant with gluten free scones! We did ring ahead because they are all made from fresh so wanted to make sure they had some.

If you're ever in the South West of England there are plenty of other beautiful places to visit in Cornwall.

Have you ever been to Cornwall?

  6. I love Cornwall and visit a few times a year. It's always good to get recommendations on great places to eat. We were in St Ives most recently and I'm kicking myself that we didn't know about The Raw Chocolate Pie company! We also love Healeys Cyder Farm - the tasting part of the tour is epic!
