How to Transition your Summer Outfits into Autumn

Even though it's meant to be Autumn, it has been a mild September in the UK so far meaning it's difficult to decide what to wear when it's warm one minute and freezing the next! But don't go packing away your summer clothes just yet... the key to dressing for transitional weather is to mix your summer pieces with a few of your classic autumn items, like a lightweight turtleneck, blanket scarf, ankle boots and lightweight jacket or just follow my transitional outfit ideas below to get you up to speed in no time.

Slip into Autumn mules

Whilst ankle boots are always on our autumn shopping list, there always has to be another footwear option and that's where mules become our transitional shoe for Autumn because not only are they cute but you can buy them open or with a closed toe depending on if your going from desk to dinner or just want a pair for casual wear. There are many different mule styles to choose from on online stores like Donaghys that can work well with tailored trousers, jeans or a fitted midi skirt.

Layer a chunky knit over a midi skirt

I don't know about you but I absolutely love midi skirts right now, they look sophisticated and can take you from desk to dancing in no time! And I have been wearing lots of them over summer in all different colours and prints but I know that I don't want to stop wearing them for Autumn so I'm going to buy myself a cropped knitted jumper and pair it over the top. Simple dressing!

Restyle your summer dress & denim skirts

Not ready to stop wearing your favourite summer dress? Just pair with tights, knee-high black boots and a leather jacket for a more edgy look or if it's a rather breezy day layer a jumper over the top. Similarly t
ransition your denim skirts to Autumn by combining them with darker coloured turtlenecks, boots and tights for the perfect fall ensemble.

Layer slip dresses over t-shirts

You might think a slip dress is a bedroom or date night piece but not when Autumn comes around and the layering season officially begins! W
hether you opt for a cami dress, or a silk, sheer or lace slip dress you can easily get away with layering any of them over a basic tee or thin polo neck, for a casual autumn outfit. Finish off your autumn look with a floppy hat.

Cover up in wide leg trousers

Legs become more covered once we transition into Autumn so look to the season's most stylish wide leg trousers. Sleek and sophisticated plus they make me look a whole lot taller and a bonus is they show off the slimmest part of the leg: the ankle. Wear your summer trousers with greens, reds and mustard's for Autumn and dress them down by pairing with trainers or dress up with heels.

Stripes and florals work for Autumn too!

Florals and stripes are two fashion trends that tend to never go out of fashion and luckily for you they can be worn pretty much all year round. Just swap your summer flat shoes or sandals that you would usually wear with your floral dress to ankle boots and opaque tights. Then throw over a chunky cardigan or blazer.

The classic striped top can be tucked in a skirt with tights and boots or even under a navy blazer with denim jeans for a weekend Parisian look.

How are you wearing your summer clothes this autumn?
